piss poor Peoria music fans

I think it's a shame that with all the Halloween parties that the hard working bands of the Peoria area put on, not a single "fan" has chimed in on how those shows were.

The stupidest and most boring of all the Halloween shows, my own Str8 Sounds Noise Explosion "Electronic Exorcism", has so far been the only one to get a comment, which was undeserved.

http://livemusicpeoria.org/blogs/vaspers-bodhissatva/2008-10-31/invitati...

Is the Peoria music scene stone cold dead?

No wonder I say "grinding mediocrity, irritating noise, bad lyrics, that's all you deserve"! It really is all the lame ass fans in Peoria deserve.

Oh, the fans will whine and bitch if you poke fun at their favorite Rock Star Icon God, but that's all the "support" they can manage to bring to the table. They get on an ego trip thinking that some Rock Idol likes them, and they lustily accept all the free CDs their beloved Rock Idol gives them. But to post just a sentence like "great show" is asking too much from them it seems.

I don't care about anybody supporting my music, but I do feel some dismay for the bands that work hard, play gigs for little to no pay, get screwed around by coked up club owners, and have to lug their equipment around everywhere.

From what I've seen (videos) and heard (mp3s) just here on Live Music Peoria, we've got an abundance of talent and fresh energy, some innovators and geniuses here in the Central Illinois music scene.

Too bad the lazy wanker fans are so selfish as to sit around with their thumb up their you know what.

I think this fan apathy is one of the sources of noise music, just pounding loud screeching feedback and throbbing walls of sound, to attack the audience with sonic fury...in hopes of waking them up out of their spell.

A sad day for Peoria.

Won't anybody give us a fan report on some of the Halloween shows our wonderful musical artists provided for the public?

Peoria fans need to get up off their asses and show some appreciation, eh?

REPEAT: I'm not asking for you to support me or the bands my buddies are in. I mean you should show appreciation for any band, no matter what venue or where you see them perform. It's so easy to post a comment here at Live Music Peoria. You can even be a coward and post anonymously. What a flock of miserable selfish unthankful lazy ass wankers.

no show

aka_eric's picture

personally, i didn't end up going to any shows this weekend - Friday Saturday or Sunday - i had other things to do. if i had gone, and i enjoyed a particular performance, i would have expressed that to the band after their set - no need for an impersonal internet posting. if you're so interested in what is going on, try showing up to a show even twice a year, then you won't need to rely on other peoples reports. in my opinion, your rant is unwarranted.

I don't understand where you're coming from. Your comments always include a close-up photo of your crooked tooth. How impersonal is that?

And besides, if I ever do go to a show, I will post a comment about it. I have a broken back and I can't get out much.

You sure post plenty of "impersonal internet" material on this site, promoting your own music, which is fine, but why is it unreasonable to expect fans to post remarks about the shows that are announced here?

but i doubt many people would recognize it.

my point was that if i have the chance to talk to the band in real life, i'll say everything that i have to say there. if i were to post anything on here it would be redundant. or it would be to serve some other purpose - either unsolicited propaganda or journalism. i don't fancy myself as some sort of scene reporter, and i don't often engage in the former. i'm sorry to hear about your back, but as i said before, if you care to know, go to the show.

maybe i'll consider posting a few blogs about my misadventures in Peoria's music scene at a later date - but only if there is a demand for it - which i doubt.

what do you think Peoria? do you care?

BTW i like my tooths - it helps me with the hillbilly look i've been attempting to cultivate. thanx for noticing.

So you feel fine about using the internet to promote your own music, but it's "redundant" to use it to show support for other people's music?

Surely you are joking.

To tell a band face to face you liked their show is nice. But the remark vanishes into thin air, possibly retained in the memory of the band members (depending on how wasted they were when you told them).

In contrast, when we post a supportive, or even a critical remark, on a web site or blog, that comment has staying power. An internet comment lasts longer, has a wider audience, than a face to face remark, which might not even be heard over the din of the frenzied crowd cheering or booing the band.

"Put it in writing" is a good principle in many aspects of life.

To use the internet to promote our own music and gigs, but to be sluggish about posting comments about other bands seems a bit selfish to me.

btw, showing your ass in a photo might generate a lot more fans from a certain segment of the male population, (called girly boys or "nancies", I think)

I dont really think that people not commenting on the performances is important (mainly because this site is still not very known outside of a few dedicated (noise and skabs? hahaha) fans. on the peoria scene message board, mostly geared toward all ages shows with a pop punk/hardcore/indie metal lean, lots of people comment on shows.

but where I agree is that the BIGGEST problem with Peoria music culture is not the lack of talent and interesting artists, but the lack of a solid, dedicated, interested fan bass. of coarse, we are not the only place in the world with this problem, I think there is a problematic lack of interest in live performance in general these days. what we all (including myself, a person who has piles of fliers in his car and is too lazy to actually put them places) NEED to do is get off the internet and tell people about all the great music happening here.

how we do this is where I am stumped. lets figure that out first

Peoria Scene site (lame)

gabby skab's picture

I went and checked out this Peoria scene website you spoke of Atomic. It's one of the worst set up most boring sites I've ever been too. There weren't that many comments about anything. It seems like it's the same 5 or 10 people that show up to these local shows you put on.And I have been out to a few of them ,so I am talking from my experience.Nothing personal, because I did enjoy your band, and I heard your new Ep at Saff's when I mastered my new Cd,and my comment there was that Marsha's vocals are sure getting stronger.I believe your little rip about my band is unwarranted since you obviously know nothing about us.But to give you some insight, there are fans willing to go to shows,if they are interesting enough, like our show on the 25th that drew 100's of people.I like this site where people are allowed to say about whatever they want without censorship and applaud Jonathan Wright for running it.There is nothing wrong with airing out differences, sometimes it makes for stronger friendships.Take Str8 and Erik for example, they are always arguing points on this site,Erik's even ripped on me here, but he came out to our show, shook my hand, gave Str8 some CD's,it was great to have him there. This is still America, and there is still free speech. And obviously there must be more than Skab (Ha Ha Ha) fans checking out this site and commenting or I wouldn't be replying to you.

2 things to clerify

first and foremost my "skabs (haha) fans" was worded poorly. the "haha" was in reference to the fact that the MAJORITY of traffic on this site SO FAR are you, eric, and Steven. I did not mean any dis to your band and am sorry it came off that way. also I appreciate your kind words about my band. I have NO dis-like for the skabs and what they do.

second: the peoria scene board I was refering to is the one on page 4 of the links section hosted through proboards, or something like that, that you have to make an account to log into. there are 2 other peoria scene boards that exist that also suffer from limited traffic.

I agree that this site is far better than all the other boards, even the one I spend lots of time on, I was just commenting on the current lack of traffic. I try to pimp this site on the other board, but its taking awhile for "the kids" to catch on

again, I am sorry I worded my comment poorly, no offense was meant to either you, steven, or eric or your respected music projects

(also, forgive my spelling)

I just like to address things I don't understand and get clarification.I think you would be surprised how many people get on this site but don't interact.I have several friends that are musicians around Peoria that say they go to the site and look around but they aren't that internet savvy so they don't do much but read the posts and put up their upcoming show dates.I don't really do much in Peoria any more, but I do enjoy coming to this site and seeing what my friends are up to and where their playing.Good luck with your new EP.

Hi everyone--

Thanks for boosting the activity on this website over the last few months. As you've seen, I've been able to keep up on approving comments, but that has been about it. I've dropped the ball on a number of items--sorry Tom.

I've had some personal issues to deal with, and work is killing me right now. Basically, I've just been really overwhelmed lately.

Oh, and I'll be going out of the country on Friday for ten days. I hope that I'll be able to keep up approving comments while I'm overseas. If anyone is interested in helping me out on that end, please let me know.

I do appreciate everyone who comments and is trying to build this site up.

I am somewhat disturbed by some of the negativity that has been generated in certain cases. I realize that that comes with the territory of an Internet message board, and I'm not inclined to censor anyone's comments, but that is really not my vision for this site. So much of the negativity has killed other sites, and I don't want that to happen here.

Anyway, I haven't disappeared off the face of the earth entirely. I'll be back, but it may be a little while longer.

Talk later--

negativity?

aka_eric's picture

i was a wiseguy in one of those scenes one xmas.

ahem

which "negativity" are you referring to?

the skabs vs bloody or
str8 vs bloody or
b9 vs bloody or
eric* vs everyone

for my own part, i can say that usually my negativity is meant to be all in good fun. i do have a very twisted sense of humor - and a penchant for instigating heated discussions. however, i usually refrain from personal attacks, which is more than i can say for some people. i try to keep it about the music. i have never understood the philosophy "if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing". i suppose that is appropriate for politicians and public relations, but i prefer "if you have nothing intelligent to say, say nothing" (even though i don't always adhere to that one either).

occasionally, i have an opinion that can be construed as truly negative by the person(s) it's directed at (example: my disdain for cover bands) but who cares what an ignorant drunk that hasn't been in a band for the last 17 years thinks? i'm sure my opinion being expressed here isn't going to be a detriment to anyone's career.

that all being said, this is your sight, and i will consider your vision when posting. have a good trip.

OK, Mary

aka_eric's picture

it's obvious that you are refusing to accept my point of view as legitimate. apparently, you would be content to repeat your assertions ad nauseam, until i or someone else finally agreed with you.

i was simply attempting to introduce a different perspective.

i wasn't the one who posted a blog whining (a pastime you are fond of accusing others of engaging in) about how terrible the fans are because they haven't bestowed adulation on their local rock gods in this particular forum. aren't you the guy who is always so critical of the "rock star"'s need for attention?

if i decide to post any comments on this site it is because it is what i want to do - not because of some feeling of obligation to anyone or anything. just because the rest of us don't share your opinion of the importance of such posts, doesn't mean we are lazy.

from my perspective, the lazy person is the one who never goes to the shows, expects others to report their experience to them, and tries to act like some kind of pundit on a rinky-dink local music forum.

on a personal note - what the hell am i selfishly promoting? not myself - that is why you never see a picture of me that isn't repulsive. not a cause - because i don't have one. not a commercial product - all my music is free.

all i am trying to do is make my music available to the handful of people who care to listen to it, using the most convenient medium at my disposal.

i'm done debating this ridiculous issue.

I'm of course not asking anyone to idolize any bands, especially not lead crooners, I'm just wondering why fans are so sluggish about posting comments about shows they've attended.

We have way too much Rock Star and "Anti Rock" Star worship today, we certainly don't need any more of that crap going on.

A worshiper of a band is a person who hates anyone who pokes fun of the band, who compulsively attends all their shows, who cannot tolerate any criticism of the band, and who think their idols are perfect. Like when they believe Michael Jackson can't be a child molester perv, because they love his stupid ass music so much.

Do you know any blasphemous rock idol worshipers? I know a few, but to be polite, I refrain from mentioning their names (Linda Cokehead, Joe Heroinshooter, Arthur Crystalmeth, Billy Pharmabuser, Sally Suede ... ooops!)

No, we don't need any more Rock Idolatry. But expressing genuine appreciation for the hard work these local bands do to provide entertainment, that is nice and normal and healthy for all. This site is called "Live Music Peoria", but it seems only the bands are alive, whilst the fans are sleeping or illiterate.

You call this issue "ridiculous"? It must not be that ridiculous, or you would have ignored it and never engaged in the discussion. I wonder if bands think it's a ridiculous issue ... who cares anyway? I just express ideas and issues that I find interesting. If nobody else cares about them, it's no skin off my nose.

I suspect many fans are technically deficient, can't figure out how to sign up, log in, and post comments... perhaps the procedure could be clarified.

I saw an internet usage statistic a few years ago that stated that only 2% of internet users ever generate content in the form of blogs, forum threads, comments, etc., so it may not be just music fans who are so shy and caveman-ish.

What do you promote on the "impersonal internet"?

Your own music, that's obvious, and natural. Now, if you want to claim that promoting your own music is not promoting yourself, that's fine with me, though I'm not sure how you arrive at that position.

And if you think the internet is "impersonal" (though I've learned tons of personal information by reading blogs, and I've used blogocombat to stir up deeply held personal beliefs and feelings)...

...perhaps you could consider abandoning the internet and just devote your energy and time to distributing your music in face to face meetings with flesh and blood offline humans, or via the postal mail system.

Rinky Dink Local Music Forum?

Then why post so many mp3s and comments, if this is such a "rinky dink" site? The contradictions just keep on a comin' Mabel.

"impersonal internet post"

"impersonal" was intended as a modifier for the subject "post", not as a modifier for "internet".

also, perhaps "impersonal" wasn't the greatest choice of words. i am definitely not the amongst the greatest of wordsmiths.

what i meant was that a few words in the corporeal will impart a great deal more (in conjunction with body language and tonal inflections) than i could ever express through the written word, given my limited vocabulary (and time).

i felt the need to clarify this point, as it was obviously a point of contention for you. now, hopefully, you understand what i was attempting to express, even if you don't agree.

interestingly, i read somewhere (so it's gotta be true), that as much as 80% of e-mail and text is misinterpreted.

and now i will lay to rest my participation in this particular thread - for good this time - no, really, i mean it - i'm done - really - i think ;)

My old musical comrade from grade school, Dan Sutton, a brilliant man and a great drummer and synthesizer player (he may have mastered many more instruments by now), who was in the Fuzzy Dice and other local bands...

...is promoting and organizing a wonderful show of eclectic Christmas seasonal music at Bradley.

There will be rock music, folk, classical, a wide variety of styles, in this special show, and best of all, 100% of the ticket cost is going to benefit abused and neglectd children.

Even those into very "dark" music surely have happy memories of Christmas as a kid. Let's buy tickets, tell our parents and friends and fans and fellow musicians about this marvellous effort.

You attend this concert, and you'll be able to feel good about having done at least one great thing this year, to help others...and to show support for fellow musicians with good intentions.

Where is your heart really at? Are we really selfish and smug, or do we just need a jerk like me to prod us into action?

I spoke to Dan Sutton on the phone yesterday, and he's worried about ticket sales. So I volunteered to help promote this concert with all the marketing expertise I have at my disposal. You'll be seeing posters and ads all over town about it, as much as we're able to do.

As I get more information about the artists listed below, I'll pass the details on to all of you.

All my songs are about how much I loathe other bands. "I used to hate people," she said. "Now I just make fun of them. It's more effective."

My lyrics are directed, cryptically or howlingly clearly, at lead singers, mostly, specific and in general, then against other bands.

When I say "you" I generally mean "Bennett" or "Ben Gay" or "BT" or "Chillroom" or "Lead Singers-in-themselves (as a whole)" or "society" or "other bands".

I had a great time at Halloween. I attended the Red Barn show where 2 girls and Trip the Light Fantastic played in full costumes! Everyone was dressed up and drinkin. It was a blast. It was the first show back from their year or-so long break. I have to say I read bits of the above posts and I love local shows. Of course I wish there were more and better venues, but at the same time I can only make it out once a weekend to see a show. I miss the Pizza Works. I think Peoria needs better organization of bands and sources such as this website are helping with that.

I worship a few bands (of montreal and trip the light fantastic). I call myself a superfan, and I am proud of that! I find myself wearing the band t-shirt and listening to them in my car, while also wearing my jacket with their button....yeah obsess much? but i only stalk them occasionally! Who wouldn't want to stalk the Schwiny-Twins??
